And now for the first competitors:
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer is known to be non-standards compliant. However, this didn’t stop it from blowing away the previous competition with a speed faster than half of the competitors (although it was disqualified).

Internet Explorer 3.0 failed the test from all viewpoints. It did not support the HTML comment test, it did not support the css, it did not support the JavaScript. It didn’t even give an error message. It’s disqualified for this leg of the tournament.

Internet Explorer 4.01 did not understand the if statement and stopped as soon as it found one. However, it did get all of the css correctly rendered.

Internet Explorer 5.01 rendered the page correctly and did the speed test without an error message.
Time: 7.614, 4.313, 21.502, and 33.456

Internet Explorer 5.55 was almost the same as IE 5.01.
Time: 9.895, 4.692, 19.628, 34.215

Internet Explorer 6.0 also correctly rendered the page and took the test without an error.

Internet Explorer 7.0 rendered the page correctly.

Internet Explorer 8.0 beta 1.
Time: 9.178, 3.189, 24.19, 33.557
The winners for the Internet Explorer category are:
IE5.01 for empty loops and total execution time, IE8.0b1 for random number generation, IE5.55 for evaluating nothing.
“A strange outcome there, I would have expected 7.0 to be the second best for all JavaScript since it was the second newest,” says Sir Soybean, “I guess they fixed up the feature bloat from IE7 to IE8.”
IE 8.0b1, 5.01 and 5.55 will be going to the finals of test 3, but 4.01 and 3.0 are disqualified. The scores are:
| Empty loops | Random numbers | Evaluating nothing | Total time taken |
|---|---|---|---|
Final scores for the IE section are 5.01 with 10 points, 8.0b1 with 8 points, 5.55 with 6 points, 6.0, 7.0, 4.01 and 3.0 with 0 points.

Well, that post was very long. However, it was interesting and I learned about the many web browsers, so I don’t feel as if I was just locked in a room with a boring college proffesor ramblingon about whatever. This version of browser wars ROCKS!
I’m amazed that there are so many different browsers! Some of them can’t handle much, which is surprising. It’s encouraging, though, that newer versions often do better.
What’s in store for BW4? Can’t wait to learn more…or was BW3 all for now?
